ODESSA NATIONAL MARITIME UNIVERSITY
Odessa is known as “SEA GATE OF NATION”. And any gate is intended to open. With that aim in mind almost 80 years ago there was established “Vodniy Institute” - Water Transport Institute – the most marine and the most Odessalike of all.
Odessa National Maritime University (ONMU) a versatile educational institution, which prepares graduates of all educational-qualifying levels (Bachelor, Specialist, Master) for full maintenance of personnel requirements for maritime and river branch.
It was established on June, 12 1930 as the Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers. In May 1945 the Institute was named as Odessa Institute of Marine Fleet Engineers. In 1994 the Institute was renamed into the Odessa State Maritime University.
Considering national and international significance of the results of University’s activity and its important contribution into development of education and science, the University was awarded with National status by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on February, 26 2002.
The ONMU is under direct subordination of the Ministry of Science sand Education of Ukraine and has got the IV-th (the highest) level of accreditation.
In 2003 the ONMU successfully completed the certification of international quality management systems ISO 9001: 2000.
The University is a member of the European Association of Universities (EAU), South East European Transport Research Forum (SETREF), International Association of Maritime University (IAMU) and Magna Charta Universitatum. Since 2005 the ONMU is the Coordinator of the University Network of Central European Initiative (CEI) in Ukraine.
Since 1995 ONMU participated in Trans-European Programs of Cooperation (TAC╤S -TEMPUS).
The University is constantly developing new and maintaining already existing relationships with high educational establishments from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, China, Algeria, Estonia and many other countries.
Odessa National Maritime University has trained staff for maritime industry of foreign countries since 1950. For this period there has been prepared graduates for 72 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The structure of University includes 9 faculties which prepare specialists on 12 specialities and carry out retraining of personnel.
The ONMU has 3 main campuses where there is an engine room, sports gym, arts hall, study rooms, IT centre, scientific library, research labs (including experimental pool and aerodynamic lab) and an up-to-date media centre with its own publishing house.

The Shipbuilding Faculty of the Odessa National Maritime University is the oldest cradle of naval architects of Merchant Fleet. The Faculty was founded in 1918 as a part of the Polytechnic Institute and in 1930 became a part of the Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers.
Nowadays, naval architect is a wide section specialist who possesses deep knowledge of the subject. The Faculty dedicates significant time to studying normative documents of classified maritime associations and international conventions. Graduates of the Faculty work in shipyards and ship repair enterprises, in project instructive bureau, scientific researching societies, educational establishments, management departments of waterways, also in detachments of rescuing and ship lifting works all over the world. For the time of its existence, the Faculty prepared over 3 thousand qualified specialists. Graduates of this Faculty work.
62 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 10 D.Sc., Professors and 27 Ph.D., Docents, among which there are academicians, correspondent members of the Transport Academy of Ukraine, Academy of Shipbuilding Science, members of Royal British Association of Naval Architects.
Educational base is supplied by such unique modern equipment as experimental pool, aerodynamic laboratory with 500 ton press resistance capacity and shaker unit, information technology laboratory and SAMP cabinet running special licensed programmes.

Joint work on staff further training and professional development is upheld with the UK International Institute of Maritime Surveyors, Shipbuilding and Ocean technology Guidance Association of the Russian Federation, Chamber of Commerce of Ukraine.

FACULTY OF WATER TRANSPORT AND SHELF CONSTRUCTIONS

The Faculty of Water Transport and Shelf Constructions of the Odessa National Maritime University was founded in 1945. Engineers-hydrotechnicians that provide design, construction and technical exploitation of sea ports, water ways, hydro technical and coastal objects, are trained on this Faculty.
Marine Engineering is one of the oldest and most important human activities. Its main destination is mastering of sea and ocean for the needs of national economy, in particular: construction of sea ports and water ways, breakwaters and quay walls, ship lifting machines and coastal port structures, special offshore constructions for mastering of the continental shelf, protection of sea coasts from destructive waves action.
For the period of its existence 4, 6 thousand engineers has graduated from the Faculty. Now they hold the managing and leading engineering positions in administrative management of departments of water ways, in repair-rescuing subdivisions and departments of subwater technical works, in sea and river ports, in shipyards and shipbuilding plants, in project and scientific researching organizations, in educational establishments.
To accomplish the tasks in training of high-qualified specialists of wide profile successfully distinctive number of scientific researches is performed in the Chairs of the Faculty for the enterprises of this branch. Scientific researches and experiments are always conducted with the participation of the students.
40 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 7 D.Sc., Professors and 16 Ph.D., Docents among which there are academicians, correspondent members of the Transport Academy of Ukraine and of the other associations.

Chairs develop cooperation with ports, ship repair plants, management departments of water ways, project and scientific researching organizations, it creates favorable conditions for improving the quality of specialists training.
The Faculty of Water Transport and Shelf Constructions takes part in great number of scientific and technical projects jointly with organizations of the same profile of different countries, maintains close contacts with ports of Odessa, Yuzhny, Illichivsk, Mariupol, Kherson, Mikolaiv, Berdyansk, Taganrog, Tuapse, Novorossiysk as well as shipyards of Kerch, Mariupol, Tuapse and many other objects of marine industry.

The Faculty of Port Mechanization was founded as a part of the Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers in 1944.
Engineers-mechanicals are prepared on this Faculty. The sphere of their activities is ensuring of high-productive work of reloading machines, their maintenance, invention of new machine constructions and transshipment process technologies, introduction of advanced progressive methods of machine work, rising of complex mechanization standards and performance of reloading process automation, organization of staff training and further improving of the level of staff's skill.
54 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 5 Doctors of Science, Professors and 11 Ph.D., Docents.
There are the heads of ports and shipping lines, directors of shipyards, technical directors of many enterprises of the maritime industry among the graduates of the Faculty.
Practically all the innovations in the training process of the Faculty are introduced according to the recommendations of the ports.
Specialists from the British Institute of Maritime Engineers, who provided the accreditation of Technical Faculties of the ONMU, estimated the work of the Faculty as of high quality. The Faculty was one of the first to be accredited and nowadays the Diploma of our University is valid in all marine states.
The laboratory base is equipped with unique training facilities and it allows to provide education of high quality for our future specialists.

The Faculty serves as the main base for training of the engineers-mechanicians for the ports of our state and foreign countries in the sphere of handling machinery exploitation, mechanization and automation of reloading processes.

Ship Engineering Faculty of the Odessa National Maritime University has existed since the day of the University foundation and engineering mechanicians are trained on this Faculty. The profile of the specialists is exploitation of ship power plants, organization and management of ship repairing and ship building on enterprises of marine transport, technical maintenance of the fleet, repairing of ship equipment, construction of ship power plants, mechanisms and power systems. Students of Exploitation of Ship Power Plants can also obtain Watch Mechanics Diploma of the third level for working on board a ship.
103 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 11 D.Sc., Professors and 24 Ph.D., Docents.
Modern professional training of ship mechanics demands mastering of the latest scientific developments. The preparing of the staff has to be supported by progressive methodical developments, modern laboratory base, experimental workshops and machine hall.

- “Protection and Safety on the Sea”
Nowadays the Ship Engineering Faculty is an industrial, educational and scientific complex that is able to solve different problems in professional training of ship and coastal engineering mechanicians of high qualification, whose professional skills satisfy the world’s requirements. During their training real ship equipment, local systems of management and machine hall are used.
The main part of educational process for specialists of Merchant Fleet is the practical studies, during which the students acquire practical skills in the machine rooms, shipyards and shipbuilding plants, scientific and research organizations, shipping companies.
Students have opportunity of doing their practical navigational work in Ukrainian or foreign companies. For engineering mechanicians of coastal services technological practice can be organized on shipyards and ship building plants of Odessa, Illichivsk, Kiliya, Mikolaiv and Kherson.

The Faculty was founded in 1930 and it had a title “The Faculty of Exploitation”. But eventually the needs of national economy and accents in educational programmes of training specialists for marine industry have been changing. In 1978 the Faculty was renamed into “The Faculty of Management of Water Transport”, and since 2001 – “The Faculty of Transport Technologies and Systems”.
66 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 9 D.Sc., Professors and 24 Ph.D., Docents.
The Faculty of Transport Technologies and Systems prepares specialists of wide profile for working in the enterprises of transport complex. Knowledge, which students get while studying on the Faculty, allows them to solve organizational and technical problems for increasing the efficiency of functioning of State marine industry and related sectors of transport. It also forms methodical approach to the solution of the problems for improving the quality of transport service and raising the competitiveness of transport enterprises.
The Faculty includes three Chairs:

The graduates of the Faculty can work as stevedores and dispatchers, production engineers and managers of Cargo Transportation Complexes in sea ports, they can head the departments and services of shipping companies, agents, brokers, crewing and surveyor companies. They also work in R&D Institutes and in maritime engineering organizations, in maritime representative agencies in Ukraine and overseas, in central state body of The Ministry of Transport and Communications and in The Department of Sea and River Merchant Fleet.

The Faculty of Economics and Management was founded at the end of 1930 as a part of Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers and it was called the Faculty of Economics. But in 1932 in the result of structural changes the entry of the students was provisionally stopped and in 1967 the Engineering-economic Faculty was founded which was renamed into the Faculty of Economics and Management in 1996.
Our graduates are trained for economic, organizational, management and researching activities in shipping companies, sea and river ports, shipyards, shipbuilding plants, in departments of sea and river ways, in department of tug-rescuing and specialized fleet, in broker’s, agents and transport expedition companies, in customs control organizations of different levels, in R&D institutes, in banks, in foreign representatives of shipping companies, in state external economic organizations, also in many other organizations of water transport and adjoining branches.
64 highly-qualified lecturers work on the Faculty, including 10 D.Sc., Professors and 36 Ph.D., Docents.

The Faculty maintains close contacts with the leading organizations and enterprises of sea and river fleet of Ukraine and outside the country. In these organizations students do their practical work and the graduates can work there. Besides this, the representatives of the Faculty perform researches ordered by these organizations. For improving the quality of training the Faculty enlists the services of high-qualified specialists of marine industry for teaching.

The Faculty of Law was founded in the Odessa National Maritime University in 1997.
Educational activity on the Faculty satisfy the requirements of modern national and international markets of transport services and of changes provided in Ukrainian and foreign law that in currently in force. Training and practice, diploma projecting are provided on the basis of modeling of real situations and problems that might be met in the future work in sphere of jurisprudence, organization and ensuring of transport process or regulation of international economic activities. For this purpose specialists of Law and executive bodies are enlisted for lecturing, practice and diploma projecting.
The Faculty consists of six Chairs:
- “Theory and History of State and Law”
- “Criminal and Administrative Law”
- “Organization of Customs Control on Transport”
- “Transport Law”
- “Civil and Labour Law”
- “Ukrainian studies”
For the years of its existence the Faculty has created firm relations with many leading European educational establishments, videlicet with the Universities of Nice, Genoa, Frankfurt-upon-Mine, and Athens. The result of such cooperation is great number of joint international manuals, four international scientific conferences, foundation of the Institute of German Law and European Development, organization of students exchange.
During their training students do the practice work in Court and executive bodies of Ukraine, in custom’s control bodies, in law departments of enterprises and organizations of maritime industry.
The faculty has opened a "Juridical Clinic", where the students of senior courses provide consultations for local citizens, if they have any questions connected with Law. All the consultations are conducted under the guidance of experienced instructors.

FACULTY OF POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

The Faculty of Post-Graduate Education and Skills Development Training of the Odessa National Maritime University was founded in 1998 on the basis of the Centre of Further Training, which is a sub-section of the main faculty today.
Main activity of the Faculty is further retraining of the postgraduates in the following specialties:
- “Economics of Enterprise”;
- “Management of Organizations”;
- “Jurisprudence”;
- “Organizations of Transportation and Transport Management”.
During its 9 years of existence, the Faculty has had over 2000 graduates.
Annually, there are over 300 students undertaking post-graduate studies, and they come from various maritime organizations and enterprises of Ukraine. All the students studying here are provided with unique course materials, which were developed by the University lecturers under special order requirements.
Having passed Accreditation of all specialties, the ONMU acquired the license which allows 450 students for retraining and the auditory of 500 attendants undertaking post-graduate studies.

FACULTY OF EXTERNAL EDUCATION
|
Training of the specialists without discontinuing work in the Odessa National Maritime University began in 1939.
People, who have got School-Leaving Certificate of the Secondary School, graduates of higher educational establishments with I-IV levels of accreditation, employees of sea ports are going to become the students of External Education Faculty.For the time of its existence, more than 8900 specialists for marine industry graduated from the Faculty. Many graduates of the External Education Faculty became the heads of shipping and crewing companies, sea ports and shipyards.
Annually about 1800 students study on this Faculty.
Training of the Bachelors and Specialists are provided on the six Specialties:
- “Organizations of Transportation and Transport Management”;
- “Ship Power Plants and Equipment”;
- “Exploitation of Ship Power Plants”;
- “Handling, Building, Road, Meliorating Machinery and Equipment”;
- “Management of Organization”;
- “Economics of Enterprise”
For the period of studying on the Faculty of External Education students do their work term and have examination sessions twice a year. These sessions include lectures, practical classes, tests and examinations. Also, students of external form of education can attend classes with students of full-time form of education.
Besides, the external education is provided on some Faculties of the University for such specialties:
- “Informational Management Systems and Technologies” (on the Shipbuilding Faculty);
- “Hydrotechnical Construction” (on the Faculty of Water Transport and Shelf Constructions);
- “Jurisprudence” (on the Faculty of Law).

PREPARATORY COURSES
FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

In 2006 the ONMU got the License of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for preparation of foreign citizens for studying at the Universities of Ukraine.
The syllabus for foreign citizens is adopted to prepare them for mastering technical science disciplines. The list of studied subjects include: Ukrainian and Russian Languages, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Drawing, Computer Sciences.
The graduates of the Preparatory courses receive a certificate which grants them the right to enter any Educational Institution in Ukraine.
